Babbitt Business District Reconstruction - Babbitt, Minnesota

Babbitt Business District Reconstruction - Babbitt, MinnesotaThere is good news today in Babbitt, Minnesota. Building has commenced on a new Zup's building to replace the one lost in a fire late last September of 2011. Reconstruction has continued in the meantime on a portion of the old building which was able to be saved. This is a big plus for the citizens of this area and things should be looking much different by the time spring rolls around. Photos

Big Bear Lake - Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

Big Bear Lake - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsI went up to this fickle lake to try and catch a few crappies but nary a one. I did catch these two nice fish though on one of my all-time favorite baits, a Northland Tackle "Forage Minnow Spoon."

Rainy Lake Walleyes - Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

Rainy Lake Walleyes - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsBlake and I made a day-trip to Rainy Lake yesterday, doing a complete about face and traveling north 100+ miles after going 100+ miles to the south (Mille Lacs) on the day before. I always say it's better to do a little traveling to the good bites than to stick around home and bang your head against the wall, trying to catch a few good ones. We teamed up with Jeremy Taschuk, pictured with a nice 28"er that was caught on a Northland Tackle Live Forage "Rippin Shad", Mindy Taschuk, their son "Bren", Tim Snider, and Tom Batiuk.

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsBack she goes. Go back to grow up to 30" or more!

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsTom Batiuk with a "throwback". Nice looking fish!

- Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsJer' with a dinker. He did well by using Northland Tackle's new Live Forage "Rippin Shad". These baits will be going to Lake Winnipeg with us.

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsTim Snider with one of several small fish that were caught. Forty feet was the magic depth.

- Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsTom with a little one. You never know if it's going to be a 12" walleye or a 30"er. Tom, who does a lot of bass fishing on Rainy Lake said he caught 27 walleyes that were 10 pounds or better, last summer while bass fishing. Wow! Count me in!

- Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsMindy Taschuk with yet another walleye. She had the hot hand and caught quite a few fish but couldn't beat her husband's 28"er. Her hot bait was a glow "segmented" body Genz Bug tipped with a whole minnow.

- Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsBlake chipped in with a few nice ones.

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsA beautifully colored pressure ridge. There were plenty of them.

- Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsPressure ridges sort of had us "hemmed in" and kept us from doing any exploring but it doesn't look like we needed to.

- Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsJeremy and Mindy Taschuk display a couple small ones. I like "that look" Mindy has. Funny.

- Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsA few of the "eaters" that were kept. All fish appear to be real healthy and not lacking for food.

- Life and Times in the Great Outdoors

 - Life and Times in the Great OutdoorsTim caught and released this nice northern pike, which really put up a good battle on light tackle in 40' of water. I'll tell you, that Rainy Lake is one heck of a fishery and I'll soon be back!
