My book "Overburden: Modern Life on the Iron Range" has been out for 18 months (gack, the time!) but I've yet to do an author event west of Grand Rapids. That sad reality ends this weekend as I make my first speaking/book appearance in the great city of Bemidji on Sunday. I'll be the featured speaker at the Headwaters Unitarian Universalist Fellowship service at 10 a.m. with a book reading and discussion at 11:30 a.m. Both events are open to the public. My awareness of Bemidji began as I attended public schools on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota. Many of my teachers had gone to school at Bemidji State so I began to imagine the place as some sort of foreign encampment where teachers trained like commandos before being dispatched to my school. The actual details of what Bemidji was, what it looked like and who lived there were hazy. The teachers would say something about a lake, make some veiled reference to parties, train off into how they started dating someone and WHAM they were married and teaching 8th grade at Cherry High School. Were they warning us? Promoting Bemidji State? (Go Beavers!) This was unclear and remains so.Headwaters Unitarian Universalist Fellowship welcomes guest speaker Aaron Brown at 10am this Sunday at 522 America Ave NW in Bemidji. He will also hold a book reading at 11:30 following the service. An author, blogger, columnist and radio commentator, Brown will share excerpts from his book, Overburden: Modern Life on the Iron Range, which addresses questions such as: Whats it like to be a blogger in a place where most people still dont use the internet? What do you do when you love where youre from but see an outside world full of possibilities? How can you shape the future when the people of your town cant stop talking about the past? This particular talk, on account of the different audience and format, will focus more on northern Minnesota cultural changes over the period I have termed "the modern Iron Range." Stop on by, Bemidji readers!

For years I've been pushing high speed internet and 21st century e-commuters as perhaps the most important way to diversify the natural resource-based economy of northern Minnesota. We can't out-sprawl the suburbs. We can't out-hipster the big cities. We can be ourselves and attract people who like the laid-back, comfortable, yet education-focused atmosphere of northern Minnesota to do the work of the 21st century.Well, you might have heard that Duluth, Minn., and Superior, Wis., (the Twin Ports) have been courting the new Google Fiber initiative, an effort by the global leader in Internet searches and servers to expand the speed of internet in the United States. The Twin Ports join several cities in seeking the first test site status of Google Fiber, but perhaps scored an important jolt to the first tier by the following response to the move by Topeka, Kansas, to temporarily rename itself "Google, Kansas."At first I thought it was weird that Duluth Mayor Don Ness got out in front of the sketch to do an intro and outro for the video, explaining that it was satire. Then, after thought, I realized that the audience for this video is not the typical mouth breathing internet addict like myself, rather, it's the people at Google. I think Duluth's answer here demonstrated that this community can do more than a symbolic gesture to get a corporate nod. Instead, Duluth responded to Topeka immediately, creatively and professionally. The Google way.Nice.Hey, Google. Duluth is the regional seat of an area with more freshwater lakes, forests, parks and alcoholic beverages than Topeka on Mardi Gras. If you want a place that's flat and desperate, go Topeka. If you want an area with an advanced network of higher education facilities that could use a job or two and wouldn't mind your company, don'cha know, try Duluth.Any effort to get such an innovative effort closer to the Iron Range, just north of Duluth, with its unique network of local economic development funding from iron mining revenue, is a good thing. Unlike other "rust belt" places past their industrial bloom, the Duluth/Iron Range/northern Wisconsin region remains a beautiful, affordable place to live. The place could just use a little juice. You know what I mean, Google.(h/t Mashable)

The "Shoulder to Shoulder" bronze is being assembled at the foundry to check how the 160 pieces fit together. It will then be in three segments that will be picked up in May by the New Mexico National Guard and transported to Virginia, Mn. for permanent assemblage. A foundry staff will accompany the bronze and spend three or four days straightening, grinding, polishing and heating for correct patina. The IRVM committee is planning a dedication ceremony for May 29, 2010 that is open to the public.

Gray Jay
a pair of Gray Jays have discovered the deer rib cage that I hung out for them earlier this winter.
Gray Jay
The 2 birds were just frantic in their exuberance in finding the new source of food. One Gray Jay was up on the rib cage pecking at the suet, while the other Jay was on the ground gathering up any scraps that had fallen.
Earlier this winter I had lamented that I didnt have a deer carcass to hang for the birds. Then a neighbor called me to say they had an extra rib cage that I could have. I jumped at the chance to get a deer carcass! It was super cold when I got the rib cage and it was frozen solid. I conned my husband into hanging in a tree in the backyard, he wasnt too thrilled about it. But its a great way to see wildlife! It will attract many different species of bird and animal. Pine Martens are particularly fond of deer suet and so are many birds, especially Gray Jays and Boreal Chickadees. In fact, Boreal Chickadees dont eat sunflower seeds like their cousins the Black-capped Chickadee. You can attract Boreal Chickadees with a deer rib cage if you are in the right place up north in Minnesota. At first only the regular yard birds, like the Blue Jays and Black-capped Chickadees, were pecking at the rib cage, maybe because it was so frozen and unscented. But now with the temperatures warming up, the rib cage has attracted what I wanted to find!
Gray Jays are really extraordinary birds, they start nesting now! I have seen young Gray Jays right out of the nest as early as May 7th. So that means those parent Gray Jays had to start nesting really early while its still winter. When you think that it takes at least 20-30 days to incubate eggs and then possibly another 20 days for a nestling to grow enough to leave the nest, they have to start laying eggs at least by March 20th.
When they first discovered the new food source, it seemed they were just so excited about it. They were gulping suet and scraps and storing it in their crops before flying off to some secret hiding place to cache their store. You see, Gray Jays store food all winter for the spring time when theyre raising young birds. There arent too many food sources in April and May for the young birds - there certainly arent any bugs out yet! Gray Jays have to rely on their stored food for that reason.
Now, when just one bird starts showing up, maybe it will signal that the other bird in the pair is sitting on eggs. It would be really cool to find an active nest. I understand that it is next to impossible - Gray Jays are very secretive and theyre smart! They hide their nests in very remote places and they might even lead you somewhere away from their nest if they know youre trying to track them.

Blake and I made a day trip run to Lake of the Woods last Saturday. Fishing was slow but we did manage a few nice fish, like this monster perch. Lake of the Woods Day TripLooking for something a little different to do, Blake Liend and I made a day-trip to Lake of the Woods last Saturday. I dont get up there nearly enough and its probably due to the three-hour one-way drive. Also, theres no crappies to be had. Im talking the Baudette area, which is famous for its walleyes and sauger fishing.Five am sounded early enough but I wish we would have left home around four because the sun was up by the time we made it out onto the lake. If I had fished up there more often, I would have better known the travel time involved. Never-the-less, we were there and we were going fishing.Going out of Adrians, we passed the resort by and headed for their ice road, where someone was standing, collecting money, I thought. No. They were basically there to check road passes and if one wasnt purchased, theyd send you back to the resort. I though it odd that there wasnt a sign of some sort back at the resort, stating that access fees were sold there. After we had purchased the pass, we made it back to the ice road and saw two other vehicles turning around and jumping through the same hoops as us. Just past Pine Island, we made a right and headed east to fish with a group of anglers already there. Close to the Canadian border, they were spread out, fishing in anywhere from 16-30, with the majority of them in the 20― depth area. Fishing had been good here. That was one of the reports that we got, upon planning our trip. Theyre always biting somewhere on this big body of water but landing in the correct spot is easier said than done. We plopped down in 24, just outside the crowd. The ice was thick, running all the way to the augers power head but an extension wasnt needed. If so, it was lying in the backseat of the truck. Fishing started out slow and remained slow throughout the entire day. We spent the first half-day near the community hole and then went in search of more productive waters. Many times, the walleye bite will peak during the morning and evening hours so a foray to deep-water for all-day sauger action is usually a good plan. Then, as late-afternoon nears, head back to the walleye area and hope for some biters.Following the contours on a Lake of the Woods gps lake map chip, we drove our truck to the nearest deep water. Thats another thing. Lake travel was excellent for those wishing to get off the main plowed roads, which hardly anyone was doing. We found a narrowed down, finger of deep water and started there, gradually working our way back up shallow again. This effort took a couple of hours. We would drill three or four holes, fish them, and move on if no fish were spotted or caught. Each stop lasted about 15 minutes if there wasnt any sign of fish but if we caught one the stay lasted up to 45 minutes or so. Our quest for fish begin about a mile out, at first deep water. Each time a move was made, it was done by pulling our Otter sleds behind the truck in 100 yard jumps. This way, all the gear was right at hand and checking for fish was easy. Blake rode on the tailgate, keeping an eye on things, while I drove, trying to make the ride as smooth as possible. The first couple of deep water stops didnt produce but as we moved along, we did find a few fish here and there. It was basically a very long, slow-tapered drop that didnt have a defining breakline of any kind. Our search had some intelligent reasoning behind it but was more founded on how lucky we would be to stop on top of fish, out in the middle of nowhere and we did.Blake iced our first keeper walleye, a 15 fish, in 29 of water. A couple of small saugers were next. Moving on, he connected with another nice walleye. This hop-skip-and a jump technique was working. Then it was my turn. A hard fighting fish, with headshakes, surprised us both when a large jumbo perch made its way to the hole. Measuring only 13 long, it was extremely heavy, with a huge forehead. Ive caught longer perch but none as heavy as this one.Hoping for a few more of the big perch resulted only in small saugers. Most, as usual, were too small to keep but a few made their way to the cooler. By the time we had worked our way back to the shallower water, it was prime time or so we thought. Fishing until almost dark, we both agreed it was time to make the long, weary trip back home. Fishing had been tough, once again. Ive been in a slump, over the last three weekends and am hoping that comes to a screeching halt when our annual trip to Lake Winnipeg takes place. I certainly hope Ive gotten rid of the skunk by then!

He's pictured at right trying to sell an affordable zipper sweatshirt that is NOT FOR SALE. Seriously though, Jaime's a great guy.The Hibbing Daily Tribune online-only Monday edition has the story (subscription only) with the amusing headline "Hibbing native to appear on comedy sitcom." Better that than a tragedy sitcom!Jaime plays the part of a bible group leader who has a role in the presumably hilarious antics of the program about people, some of whom are David Spade. Anyway, Tintor is a hardcore Ranger living in L.A. and you should send him hearty huzzahs on this eve.
I have learned from two sources that Tom Bakk told people at the SD-05 convention that he and Tom Rukavina have discussed combining forces before the April DFL state convention, uniting behind the one of them with the most pledged support. This puts even more importance on Bakk doing well in his home district and Duluth next weekend. It would also heighten the pressure on Bakk and Rukavina as they pry delegates from every other corner of the state. As I wrote earlier, Rukavina carried the day this weekend at the SD-05 gathering in Hibbing and boasts a delegate advantage at this time.Regardless of whether the candidate is Rukavina or Bakk, a united Iron Range campaign is bound to be more competitive at the convention than two competing ones. Further, it would help either of them as they contest the remaining labor endorsements. It bears mentioning that the Iron Range share of the convention floor will practically include less than 10 percent of the vote, 10-15 percent more if you include Duluth (which you shouldn't because it will be less unified). This entire enterprise is based on the premise that one of these candidates can garner support from delegates beyond the Range faithful.

A highly placed source informs me that yesterday's SD-05 DFL Convention in the heart of the Iron Range was a blowout. State Rep. Tom Rukavina took 16 delegates to fellow Iron Ranger Tom Bakk's mere 3. Four delegates were elected as uncommitted.Rukavina represents District 5A, which is the core of the Mesabi Iron Range's active mining zone (Check out my interview with Ruk). Bakk represents District 6 (Here's my interview with Bakk). That massive district includes a small part of the eastern Mesabi and the old Vermilion Iron Range by Ely and Babbitt, along with rest of the vast Arrowhead region and parts of Duluth. So while SD-05 was most assuredly Rukavina's home turf, the size of his victory has to be troubling to Bakk, particularly because Rukavina could be competitive, if not victorious, in the 6th as well. Rukavina's home is just a few miles away from the 5/6 line and he's a well known quantity in the Ely area.Next week I'll be attending my local Itasca County Unit convention in Bovey on the western Iron Range. There the remaining 12 "Iron Range" delegates will be pledged. Rukavina was the leading vote-getter in the Itasca County precinct caucus straw poll. Bakk finished third.Meantime, a cursory glance at the totals coming out of the conventions around the state show that Rukavina is picking up a few delegates elsewhere, but only a few. He'll be back in the pack at the state convention this April and will need both a plan and a miracle to break out.ALSO: If you're interested in the unique culture and politics of the Iron Range, check out my book "Overburden: Modern Life on the Iron Range," winner of the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award from UM-Duluth and the Friends of the Duluth Public Library.

Real estate sales is a business activity that relies on imagery as, perhaps, its most effective marketing tool.
Some Sellers find that their property, because of its complexity, will require images to effectively detail the complete story of their propertys features.
Fortunately, there are abundant tools to insure that prospective Buyers see the information they need to qualify a potential property of interest.
Custom online maps are certainly one way to provide information on a feature rich property. Â Maps populated with location specific links that are tied to additional layers of information is one pretty nice solution.
I have a current listing that takes advantage of those tools. Â Its a large Lake Vermilion property (offered in several variations) where the listing information includes an enhanced Google map. Â I think all parties benefit when imagery helps the Seller to sell and the Buyer to buy.
View the listing here. Â View the map here.
I hard to believe that, not so many years ago, Buyers received 4 by 6 glossy photos sent through the mail as a response to their request for additional listing information.
Wow.

This photo shows some feathers that look like they might cover her nostrils. I suppose that would help when temperatures drop below zero.
Pine Grosbeak, 1st winter male
At this time of the year, the young males are molting into their adult plumage. You can see the bright red feathers as they mix in with the bronze feathers of his juvenile plumage.
Pine Grosbeak, young male
I always try to get some shots of this stage in a Pine Grosbeaks life, but it is a small window of time. It seems like the adult males leave first, maybe to hurry back to their breeding grounds for the best territory. For a week or so only the females will be at the feeders, then it seems on March 15th they dont come in to the feeders anymore. They might still be migrating through, but they pretty much stay up in the trees after the 15th. Then by April theyve all left.
American Goldfinch
The Goldfinches too, are molting, but here the males are molting into their alternate, or breeding plumage. The bright yellow is starting to show up under this birds chin. The females molt too and grow new feathers every year, but they keep their dull plumage all year.

Ever since 1998 when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) allowed professional athletes the opportunity to play for their respective countries, the talent pool and depth in ice hockey has increased exponentially. Most hockey experts agree- having a diverse and talented pool of players usually results in greater parity among the competitive teams, if not overly favoring the traditionally dominant countries that we all know about. History knows that exceptions exist. In the 1970's, Team Canada boycotted the Olympic games over the supposedly flagrant use of professional players in the former USSR.  The question remains why? Is it relevant to consider administrative "cold war mentality" factors including pressure from a neighboring country and of course, the progressive 1970's Canadian politics? Was it because of certain vocal hockey purists- we know they exist in Canada- who regularly discredited and ridiculed the foreign opponents while promoting their own brand of old fashioned team spirit? Not that USA is free of scrutiny. We've always been known as a country that defends rugged individualism. he shoots... he SCORES!In retrospect, we humbly recognize that Soviet Union athletes like goalie Vladislav Tretiak and forwards Valeri Kharlamov and Boris Mikhailov were simply disciplined hockey players whose skill level, team-play, and use of strategy were considered a step above your average puckster. Sure they played together more, sang songs, lived closely, and bonded together as comrades. So what.  A simple recognition of these facts suggests that these guys were the hockey sharks of yesteryear. Untouchable. In fact, nobody dominated world competition hockey more than the USSR in 1956-1976. Not even Canada. That all changed in 1980 with the "amateur" victory of Team USAs Miracle on Ice. Personally I am very fond of the concept of amateur only international hockey. But today, we live in a different time. The 20th Century Herb Brooks ice hockey model seems antiquated now, and not consistent with other high profile international sports like soccer, basketball, baseball, etc.Can anyone say rugged individualism. A good idea thats run its course in the sporting world perhaps. In any case, if you have a position on why the IOC should limit Olympic competition to amateurs Id love to hear it. Would your answer involve money, greed, NHL contracts, endorsements¦.?What hasnt changed in sporting competition is the idea of an underdog. Whether its civil rights, politics, social justice, music, or sports the concept of an underdog can often be a blessing in disguise. Texas indie-rock band Spoon defied thematic odds and crafted an edgy-uptempo song entitled "The Underdog". A critical and subversive commentary on the dominant powers that even Van Morrison can like. Perhaps it's also a rubuttal of the Goliath syndrome found in sports today. Lead-singer Britt Daniels raspy vocals pleads with us,"Cause you don't talk to the water boy and there's so much you could learn but you don't want to know,You will not back up an inch ever, that's why you will not survive,The thing that I tell you nowIt may not go over wellAnd it may not be photo-opin the way that I spell it outBut you won't hear from the messenger, don't wanna know bout something that you don't understand,You got no fear of the underdog, that's why you will not survive! (Hey!)"The underdog mentality even raised it's head before this years Super Bowl. In what's becoming a tired media cliche, important news anchors raise the question, "Who do you like in the Super Bowl." Naturally, President Obama was more favorable of the underdog football team the New Orleans Saints. But I refer you again to the ice hockey world because it's worth repeating Team USAs most-unpredictable achievement as the watershed example of underdog sports victory. In contrast,  an even earlier generation of hockey players and critics point to the forgotten-miracle on ice that occurred in 1960 at Squaw Valley, California. Arguably in their minds, the best team ever to lace the skates and take the gold. Can anyone say rugged individualism?Forgotten Miracle Trailer from Forgotten Miracle on Vimeo.Resources: The First Miracle on IceBefore the Miracle on Ice: 'Team of Destiny'Which brings us to the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver B.C, Canada. No serious hockey critic considers Team USA a threat to the win gold or even place in the top three. A common factor that usually adds up to being identified as the underdog. If your General Manager Brian Burke, placing more media attention and focus on Canada and Russia while simultaneously downplaying the strength of your own players does have a certain advantage. Coach Ron Wilson would rather view the team as the "bad guys". Not goon mentality per se but a collection of players with youthful vitality capable of overcoming a hostile environment in a boiling point arena overflowing with Canadian pride. Sam Donnelon of phillynews.com sums up how to spin Team USA's chances in Vancouver. In the Harbor Star school of hockey goaltending is everything in the Olympics. For Team USA to place or win gold, top goalie Ryan Miller (Buffalo Sabres) will need to perform like a circus act... he'll need to stand on his head to stop the onslaught of pucks coming his way. What about the rest of the team? In an interview with managing editor Shawn P. Roarke of nhl.com veteran forward and Minnesota native Jamie Langenbrunner (New Jersey) expresses an admirable gritty approach to the upcoming games, "I never consider myself an underdog... I go into every game believing I can win and that I am going to win. It's the organizations I've grown up playing in and fortunately I've been on some good ones and it's kind of fed that a little bit...I don't think anyone going on the ice wearing our jersey is going to be thinking, 'Oh we don't deserve to win tonight.' That's not going to be our mentality and that's not going to be anyone's mentality. We're all competitors, we're all in the NHL and we're all the top of our profession." Read more: U.S. team: We're no underdogs  vs Young US team relishes underdog role. What's hard to believe is no Canadian ice hockey team has won gold medal while being the Olympic host nation. Nevertheless, I'm concerned about our neighbors to the north. While I acknowledge the passion of the sport and it's link to the cultural fabric of Canada, I cannot help but whisper ...the pressure's on my friends of the North!  May the best (or luckiest) team win. By the way...do you have a game plan to stop Alexander Ovechkin? I don't think we do either. Finally, let's all be sure to watch and support our Women's ice hockey team. The growing rivalry with Canada is not to be missed. Bundle up the kids and participate in the Take-A-Kid Ice Fishing Clinic at Lake Carlos State Park on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 1 to 4:30 p.m.     This event will get everyone from preschoolers to teens outside and back into nature, said Ryan Sansness, assistant park manager. This clinic is geared towards families that have little or no ice-fishing experience.       The clinic is free to attend, but people should call the park at 320-852-7200 to register before Feb. 11, because class size is limited.     The ice-fishing clinic begins inside the parks visitor center, where presentations will be given on ice-fishing safety, gear, techniques, and “ most important “ how to have fun. Kids will be able to make their own jigging stick to use on the ice and take home. The last hour of the clinic will take place on Lake Carlos, where well attempt to catch sunfish, crappies, and even the elusive walleye.       Christopherson Bait of Alexandria donated the fishing equipment needed to make the jigging sticks. One kid will win a complete ice-fishing kit at the end of the clinic.     Adults do not need a fishing license to attend. Anglers age 18 and older can also fish without a license from Feb. 13-15 if they are accompanied by a child younger than 16 and actively participating in Take-A-Kid Ice Fishing Weekend.        A vehicle permit ($5 one-day or $25 year-round) is required to enter the park and can be purchased at the park office.       Lake Carlos State Park is located 10 miles north of Alexandria. From State Highway 29, go two miles west on Highway 38 to reach the park entrance.    -30- Â

Anytime Ive prescribed a silvicultural treatment that calls for leaving a fair amount of residual trees during a harvest invariably Ill hear the catch-all phrase from local loggers, why are you leaving these trees? There just going to blowdown anyway, so we should cut them now and not let them go to waste! Naturally, in a good-hearted and thoughtful way, Ill respond by stating, not all of them will¦. but more importantly let me explain why we are leaving these trees. So goes a typical day in the woods for many foresters in Northern Minnesota. A day thats often fulfilled more by explaining the why behind forest management than attempting to meet local economic timber needs. I say that with a bit of trepidation. As a forester, I am very attuned to the timber market conditions that result from a major economic downturn. It concerns me to see people go out of business. No one denies that the logging community and other wood product workers have suffered recently. However lets not forget an important connection thats still in need if we want to maintain the ability to manage our forests for a variety of needs including timber. That connection is human relationship. The desire not only to recognize the other but to build a shared understanding of forest community, where foresters support loggers and loggers support foresters. Although we might be at odds on an individual timber sale, we should recognize that our common interests ought to transcend any minor differences. So Jude¦ why are you leaving these trees?  Stay tuned...

So I am sitting in my office, should be working on my Christmas Eve sermon, but I am distracted by watching this storm track across the midwest, headed our way. I keep getting interrupted by people calling and asking if we are still going to have worship tomorrow (Christmas Eve), and whether or not things are going to change. And I can't help but think...first of all, I live like 150 feet from the church. If I can't get there, we must have gotten 6 feet of snow (which we are predicted to get closer to 8 inches!!). Secondly, we will have worship, with whoever can make it.Why? Because Jesus came. Jesus came to a world that wasn't really ready for him...but had been waiting forever. Jesus came, not in the perfect hospital room, but in a manger full of hay, and in a cave that smelled like animals. Jesus came, and the Word was proclaimed to the shepherds first, the lowest of the low.Ready or not, here he was, in all his messy glory. And it is for that reason that we gather on Christmas Eve. It isn't because we have always done it...it isn't because we are supposed to do it...we gather because we will never understand the mystery of a God who loved the world so much that Jesus had to be born. We gather because we need to be reminded that in the midst of whatever crazy things are going on in our lives, Jesus comes into the heart of them.So wherever you are this Christmas, whether you are with your family and friends, or snowed into your house with nothing to do, take the time to celebrate. Because Jesus came for you!

Magnificat sent me this amazing replication of the Christ child. Enjoy it's pure radiance and beauty. Have a Blessed, Merry Christmas! My soul magnifies the Lord,And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior. For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with His arm:He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree. He has filled the hungry with good things;and the rich He has sent empty away.He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy; As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. AmenLK 1: 46-55***Lord, in this holy season of prayer and song and laughter, we praise you for the great wonders you have sent us: for shining star and angel's song, for infant's cry in lowly manger. We praise you for the Word made flesh in a little Child. We behold his glory, and are bathed in its radiance. Be with us as we sing the ironies of Christmas, the incomprehensible comprehended, the poetry made hard fact, the helpless Babe who cracks the world asunder. We kneel before you shepherds, innkeepers, wise men. Help us to rise bigger than we are. Amen. The Recovery of Hope VisualsThanks and many prayers for Fr. Nassal C.PP.S. and his Advent retreat special this month. The Holy Spirit is working through you and your offerings have inspired us all. I sincerely hope that your ministry in Berkeley continues to transform and heal those in need.

DNR NEWS “ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DECEMBER 21, 2009Media contacts: Colleen Coyne, DNR communications director,651-259-5023; Patricia Arndt, Minnesota State Parks planning and publicaffairs manager, 651-259-5578.Itasca State Park's youth deer hunt gets kids outdoorsItasca State Park hosted its first firearms youth deer hunt earlierthis fall. Forty young hunters participated in the event, with aconfirmed harvest of seven deer. The two-day hunt was meant to help meetthe park's deer reduction goals while encouraging new hunters. Thisevent was in addition to a regular season hunt with yearly participationof nearly 500 hunters. Although the number of deer has decreased across the region, thepopulation is still higher than Park Resource Specialist Cathy Handrickwould like to see. "We are still seeing deer browse that is affectingour forest regeneration efforts," she said. Prior to the hunt, the young hunters had an opportunity to attend aday-long mini-camp, where they learned the basics of deer hunting frommembers of the Park Rapids Chapter of the Minnesota Deer HuntersAssociation (MDHA). The mini-camp covered topics such as tracking, treestand safety, and compass use. Both the MDHA and park officials believeeducating and encouraging young hunters is critical to instilling theimportance of Minnesota's outdoor heritage in future generations. Some participants bagged their first deer during the youth hunt, whileothers simply enjoyed the time spent in the woods with a parent ormentor. One young hunter who didn't see any deer said he was stillexcited, because he had never heard a grouse drum before. "Whether these young hunters bagged a deer or not, the underlying goalwas to get youth engaged in the outdoors," said Matt Snyder, ItascaState Park manager, "Anytime you can get youth involved outdoors, itgives them an appreciation of the natural resources and what Minnesotahas to offer." -30-

Shes eight years old.  Eight years old and her parents have been divorced since the summer.  Eight years old and she doesnt know what house to call home.  Eight years old and shes lost.
She began the school year living with her maternal grandmother, attending a new school, living in town and not on a farm anymore.  Her brother lives with their paternal grandparents, attending a different school than her, five miles away geographically but forever away in her daily life.  Every other Friday, she dutifully packs her backpack and goes with her father for the weekend, returning again Sunday night to get ready for another week at her new school with her new surroundings and new friends.
By December, she reaches the end of her ability to stay cheerful.  She tearfully tells her father that she simply misses her big brother, her hero, too much to stay living in town, so shes moved once again to another new home-but-not-quite-home.  Her paternal grandparents welcome her in.  Welcome in this young girl with a vivid imagination, more energy than grandparents in their 60s can possibly control and an overwhelming desire in her heart for any sense of normal again.Â
And back to her old school with her old friends she goes.
The day of the schools Christmas Program and classroom parties arrives.  She sings along to carols that shes always known and mouths words to songs that she hasnt had time to learn yet.  Shes back with her old friends, but nothing is for her what it was the year before.  She looks out into the audience and knows that there are no parents there for her.  In her class of 60, she is one of two with divorced parents and as her friends and classmates wave and smile at their parents, she stands there alone and looks at everyone and no one.
The Program ends and they return to the classroom.  She looks at all of the presents stacked and her stomach sinks when she realizes that she hadnt been going to the school yet when names were drawn for the gift exchange.  Her throat closes up and she wants to cry because all she wants is to fit in and be normal and not have anyone notice that she alone has no presents under the classroom tree.    She just wants normal¦
When the teacher goes to the tree and pulls out a present and says her name, shes still staring down at her shoes.  Staring down at her shoes hoping desperately for the day to be over so she can be anywhere but there where all of her classmates have married parents and normal lives and dont live with their grandparents and dont live out of their backpacks on the weekends.  Anywhere but there where all of the kids have presents and wait, was that her name she heard?  She cautiously goes up to the teacher, terrified that she heard it wrong and fearing worse embarassment if the teacher says I didnt say your name, you must have heard me wrong.  But the teacher doesnt say that, instead she smiles down at the little girl and hands her a present that clearly has her name written on it, with Mrs. Carlson on the From line.  The girl looks up with a confused look and the teacher smiles gently and whispers to her, I realized this morning that you werent coming to school here when we drew names, so I went at lunch to buy you this gift.  I hope you like it.
Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, but he doesnt always go by that name.  At least once hes gone by Mrs. Carlson.

Interesting.  I just looked to the right of my desk and saw that I have a PolyMet hat sitting on my bookshelf.  It seems fitting since that project has been on my mind a lot lately as well as the minds of many Minnesotans.  People talk about how were at a crossroads right now, trying to decide if Minnesota should open its first copper/nickel mine or if the ore should be left where the powers-that-be (or more accurately, volcanic activity, but I digress)  placed it in the ground.Â
Proponents, such as myself, look at the issue from a few dominant perspectives.  One perspective wants the jobs on the Range.  That isnt my driving factor to want the mine to be located up here, not for myself anyhow.  My tush is pretty firmly set in Side Lake and after 9 months of driving everyday to Hoyt Lakes from here back a few years ago, I know I dont want to repeat that drive.  However, I can understand peoples strong desires to have these jobs up here.  That is one key yay! to mineral resources, its pretty difficult to outsource the jobs when the ore is located here.  Mining  jobs pay real wages where the workers can afford to actually contribute money back into their local economies.  The lure of PolyMet is not only the 400 primary jobs, but the vast number of secondary jobs that will spin off.  You dont need an economics degree to understand the impact of 400 jobs that pay well over the living wage.Â
The perspective that I approach this project from is based on the reality of reality.  I played a little game in my head on my way home today called Cradle to Grave where I mentally assessed my life to see where my consumer goods came from and where they will end up going someday (yes, sad I know, but this is what happens when youre me).  I live a very simple life and for the most part, deplore gross consumerism as something for insecure people, but the origins of my material possessions reflect the make-up of the United Nations fairly well (if China had about 50 more delegates than every other country).  I imagined a world where all of the mined materials [including plastics (oil-based after all)] were gone tomorrow.  My book would have no spiral binder, my pen would vanish, I wouldnt be able to listen to MPR, my gardening tools would vaporize, my house would collapse as screws/nails and other holding-together-thingamabobs fell out.  I dont understand what the alternative to mining is to those who blast it religiously.  A ban on freely reproducing because societys carrying capacity would drop sharply without metals and fossil fuels?Â
If people oppose mining so passionately, why must they continue to support it through their purchases?  Could they please admit that a semi-modern life is dependent on the miners and mining activity they abhor so greatly?  The Industrial Revolution happened, sorry?  Im exhausted by the hypocrisy as they write editorials about how destructive and soul-destroying mining is while on their laptop in a nice warm home with running water brought to them courtesy of mining and metals processing.  Sigh¦
My old boss had a simple rule.  We werent allowed to go to him with a problem unless we had considered our solutions and could present options to him.  I completely understand that policy now.  I have grown weary of hearing about the evils of PolyMet without one single solution being offered, other than not mining here.  The opponents might as well stand up and declare lets outsource our impacts to Mother Earth.  Its as if certain people only became aware of the source of their quality-of-life now when faced with it in NE Minnesota.  Where did they think all the gidgets and gadgets lining the shelves at Target came from before this new awareness?  This Christmas as they purchase gifts, will they think twice before buying the batteries for Juniors toys?  Will they look at the origin of their wrapping paper and realize that even processed paper contains material that was mined?  Will she be as excited for the diamond necklace or will she finally understand that her bling-bling came from a hole-hole in the ground-ground?  The larger question for me is, will they even care or will they believe that their consumer habits are fine as long as others far, far away have to live with the consequences of their checkbook decisions?
There are no easy solutions in this debate and it saddens me that its tearing the Range apart (as described a few days ago in the DNT).  However, it amuses me (in a non-haha sort of way) that people are so focused on their different perspectives that they cannot sit down and honestly, calmly discuss what they have in common and figure out how we can bring those viewpoints together.  Here is what I see in common between all of us.  Okay, most of us, some people are just totally off the spectrum either way and I will choose to believe they are not representative of well, anybody other than themselves.
1) We would like to maintain a decent standard-of-living which means that well be using products containing materials that were mined.Â
2) We dig having clean water, clean air, clean soil and veggies/critters that we can eat confidently knowing they wont cause us to keel over.
3) We would like the Iron Range to stay economically and socially viable with a diverse economy comprised of a magically delicious mix of service- and resource-based jobs.
4) We care about the next generation and well, this generation too, I guess.
5) We enjoy NE Minnesota because it isnt the Twin Cities (I had to slide that in because you know Im right, hee hee) and we like it all nature-y and stuff.
Is a rational discussion possible at this point or am I just an idealistic Aquarian?

ATVAM
December 7, 2009
Dear ATVAM Membership,
I am part of a Minnesota based Search and Rescue Resource group (www.srrrmn.org) that has been working to find the body of Brandon Swanson out of Marshall, MN. Brandon went missing in May 2008 and weve been searching over 100 square miles of farmland trying to locate his body.
Its been found that detail searching these large fields on foot is exhausting work, especially now that much of the land has been tilled.  Accordingly, we would like to try a slightly different approach to searching these fields.  They are in the process of trying to hunt down several side-by-side ATVs (Polaris Ranger, Kawasaki Teryx or Mule, John Deere Gator, Artic Cat Prowler, Yamaha Rhino, etc.).  Put a human remains detection dog and handler in the back and you can make a lot of miles without becoming exhausted.  If the dog shows interest, you jump out and work out the scent cone and/or detail the area. If a particular dog doesnt take to the idea, we simply revert back to foot and paw work and use the machine to shuttle the team around.
We am trying to locate several businesses or individuals that would be willing to lend us one or more side-by-side ORVs, or anyone would be willing to bring out their ORV and assist with the search for this coming weekend of December 12-13.  Regular ATVs are not needed - we need the side-by-side versions so we have the driver and handler safely seated, plus the box in the back for the dog.  This will be our last search of 2009, and weve got a lot of ground to cover.  This is the last chance in 2009 for the family to put closure to this tragic situation.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate.
Anyone interested in helping can contact myself at the contact information below, or contact the search manager (also my brother) at 612-708-2996 (cell) or jhasse@comcast.net.
Thank you for your assistance.

Taking a moment to recognize where Thanksgiving Day is truly celebrated” Perhaps the World Ends Here  by Joy HarjoThe world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what, we must eat to live. The gifts of earth are brought and prepared, set on the table. So it has been since creation, and it will go on. We chase chickens or dogs away from it. Babies teethe at the corners. They scrape their knees under it. It is here that children are given instructions on what it means to be human. We make men at it, we make women. At this table we gossip, recall enemies and the ghosts of lovers. Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms around our children. They laugh with us at our poor falling-down selves and as we put ourselves back together once again at the table. This table has been a house in the rain, an umbrella in the sun. Wars have begun and ended at this table. It is a place to hide in the shadow of terror. A place to celebrate the terrible victory. We have given birth on this table, and have prepared our parents for burial here. At this table we sing with joy, with sorrow. We pray of suffering and remorse. We give thanks. Perhaps the world will end at the kitchen table, while we are laughing and crying, eating of the last sweet bite. Copyright © 1994 by Joy Harjo. Used by permission of W.W.
In a recent article published on MinnPost, the author beseeched women to stand up and say Enough to the PolyMet project.Â
So I stand before you and say Enough!
For my fellow women scientists and engineers, I cry Enough!  Our female minds are rational, fact-based and view the world statistically, graphically and independently from the influence of male colleagues.  We are well-educated, experienced professionals who are able to dispassionately review the PolyMet draft EIS.  We operate under strict ethical codes of conduct as well as consciences that were formed in the generation of the Clean Water and Clean Air Acts.  We understand risk assessment, risk management and accept our responsibility to minimize the consequences created by a consumer-driven society.  We are working as professionals in industry, earning solid wages and the respect of our male coworkers as we battle together the challenges created by a global economy.    Â
For my mining colleagues, men and women, I cry Enough!  Mining has created our civilization and is the reality of a world requiring industrial-scale agriculture, water and wastewater treatment and simple, quality-of-life goods such as structurally sound houses.  If it cannot be grown, it has to be mined.  We are not able to select where the Earths minerals are found, but we are able to select as responsible citizens and consumers where and how we want these minerals to be mined.  The raw materials of civilization can be forged in Northern Minnesota where there are environmental regulations and fair wages or the mines can exist only in foreign countries with limited, if any, regulations to protect workers, their families and their ecosystems.  We operate and live in not only a global economy, but also a global environment.  Air currents and the hydrological cycle guarantee that contrary to the bacchanalia of Vegas, what happens in China most definitely does not stay in China.  Â
For those of us who live and breathe facts, I cry Enough!  The facts are that while PolyMet may be headquartered in Canada, the employees making up the majority of the current workforce are Rangers who have their roots here and who will stay here whether or not this project moves forward.  The fact is that we live in a global economy in 2009.  Other countries such as China are developing rapidly and either Rangers benefit from Chinas growth through the sale of our resources or we choose to become dependent on a service-based economy that may not prove to be more sustainable for the Range in the long-run than a resource-based economy.  The fact is that there are those of us who do not see destruction when we see a mine.  We see the construction of homes, bridges, modes of transportation, communication devices and medical instruments.  We recognize and applaud wise utilization of the Earths resources for the improvement of society.
For my nieces who refer to their moms 1-ton, horse-trailer hauling, diesel-burning pick-up as the chick truck, I cry Enough!  There are a lot of us women who refuse to be along for the ride in our lives.  We are intelligent, we are strong, we are resourceful, we are independent and yes, we are feminine.  Stereotypes may save time, but are painfully antiquated.  The opportunities for my nieces as they grow up are abundant courtesy of the women who have refused to be labeled or placed in a teeny-tiny box of expectations.  I would be honored to have them follow in my footsteps as an environmental professional on the frontlines, using technology and common sense to find a way to balance civilizations need for mineral resources with the corresponding need for environmental stewardship.Â
For the men who are often unfairly lambasted, I cry Enough!  You are protective husbands, fathers and neighbors who lace up your steel toes everyday to contribute your talents at the mines and contribute to your familys financial well-being.  Even with the recent economic downturn, you are still solid husbands and fathers providing emotional support for your family.  You work alongside increasing numbers of young women where you mentor us and pass along your hard-earned knowledge to us.  You encourage your wives and daughters in their career choices or cheer them on as stay-at-home moms.  You are our teammates at home and in the workplace.  Your children are the future of the Range and you strive to ensure that they have the ability to live and work here someday and raise your grandchildren.  The children are yours too.
For the future of the Iron Range as more than a tourist destination, I cry Enough!

I've spent my life on the Iron Range, caught in its mix of ethnic cultures, blue-collar hard-working ethics, and rural small-town living. The summer after I retired from teaching, I attended the scoping hearing for PolyMet, Inc., a proposed Canadian copper nickel mine near Hoyt Lakes. I came home with a 200-page scoping document and an emerging awareness of how the landscape of the Iron Range is a byproduct of a century of mining.
